Interview with Chris Terins / Co-Owner S-One Helmets
S-One Helmet Co. has been in business since the late 90's and this is your first Interbike Tradeshow?
S-One has deep roots in skateboarding. We have been shipping to skateshops for the last 12 years. We ship to about 800 independent skateshops so we never really had to go to Interbike because we really weren't shipping to bikeshops. I had a few bike shop owners come by the booth and say,"Oh... a new helmet company." And I explain to them that we have been making helmets for over ten years.
So why are you getting into BMX now?
Alot of BMX guys were wearing S-One Helmets but we never had the time to develop a BMX program. And then I met Robert Granado who had worked at Volume and Demolition for 8 years and has been riding all his life. So Robert pretty much came in and built an amazing team and started opening up bike shops. In less than a year he built a BMX dream team (Morgan Wade, Alfredo Mancuso, Dave Dillewaard , Brian Yeagle, Alex Platt and Adam Banton) and he has opened a some solid bike accounts. (including Dans Comp.)
What is you're take on BMX helmets?
If your on a bike you should be wearing a CPSC Certified helmet. The soft foam non-certified helmets are not going to protect your head enough in a bike crash. If you're a rider or a parent of a rider we recommend the S-One Lifer Helmet or the S-One Kid Helmet. Both of these helmets fit great and offer the best protection.
What were your best selling helmets at the Interbike show?
Everybody was digging the Lifer because it fits awesome and it is certified. The S-One Kid Helmet was popular for the same reason... good fit and great protection. And some shops still want to order the soft foam non-certified... with the soft terry liners. But Lifers and Kids are our best sellers.
What is your focus for 2013?
Fit and safety are #1. Some helmet companies are focusing on flair. S-One has always been a product driven helmet company. We have pride in keeping our pro riders comfortable and safe. Fit and protection is our primary focus.
